SSSL, the tiny Finnish Social Democratic Journalists' Union, which is affiliated to SAK, recently elected Mr Harri Järvinen as the President of the Union. Mr Järvinen works as a full-time officer of KTV, the Trade Union for the Municipal Sector, where he is responsible for the communications unit. KTV is the largest of the SAK affiliated unions.

Mr Järvinen will hold the presidency of SSSL for the next two years, at the same time working in his full-time job with KTV. The purpose of SSSL is to improve the professional skills of journalists and communicators and to participate in debates on those policies which concern the media. In April, SSSL will organise an open event during which the recent transformation of the world of communication will be discussed.

SSSL has 350 members, who consist of journalists and communicators employed, for example, by the trade union press, newspapers and by radio stations. The interests of journalists are, in the main, represented by the Finnish Journalists' Union, which is not affiliated to any trade union central organisation.
